Solo Music for Accordion

The Iranian-Canadian Composers of Toronto (ICOT) and the Canadian Music Centre are pleased to announce the winners of its call for scoresin collaboration with internationally renowned Concert-accordionist Michael Bridge. The pieces will be performed as part of the opening concert of CMC Presents, the Canadian Music Centre’s annual concert season on September 14 at 5:30pm EST.
The call was open to pieces written for solo accordion. Fifty-three submissions were received from composers across the globe with a variety of styles and compositional aesthetics. At the outset the jury intended to select three pieces, however due to the high quality of submissions, seven scores were chosen. The selected composers and compositions are:

Asterism Gilberto dos Santos Agostinho Filho (Germany)
Daramad Ali Balighi (Iran)
Mosafer Nastaran Pouladzadeh (Canada)
Study No. 2 Alan Ahued Naime (Mexico)
Trazo Edson Zampronha (Spain)
utrolig varmt vann Tze Yeung Ho (Norway) CMC Associate Composer
Virgules Christina Athinodorou (Cyprus)

These pieces will be performed along with a composition by ICOT member Pouya Hamidi.
The jury members reviewing submitted works included Keyan Emami (composer, ICOT President), Maziar Heidari (composer, conductor, ICOT Music Director), Michael Bridge (accordionist), and Joseph Macerollo (accordionist, University of Toronto professor). 
Jury member and internationally renowned accordionist Michael Bridge commented:
“I was elated by the large number, high quality, and intriguing variety of the submissions. In its relatively short 188 year history, the accordion has become an entrenched folk icon in so many cultures around the world, and is now becoming a recognized concert instrument on more and more professional stages.”
